You don't need expensive equipment to start podcasting. We've curated a few setups ranging from what you already have to a dedicated home office rig. Pick the level that fits your situation and budget.
You can start recording with your laptop and a pair of headphones. For desktop recording, use your built-in laptop camera, AirPods or other headphones with a microphone (highly recommended over your laptop's built-in mic), a window or lamp for lighting positioned behind the camera and pointing toward you, and a background that isn't a window (your office or a clean, naturally-lit room works well).
For mobile recording, use an iPhone 13 or newer with the Descript app, a phone tripod, and the same headphones, lighting, and background guidance above.
A portable recording studio that fits in a backpack and sets up in about five minutes. This setup adds a Rode Wireless Micro (two wireless microphones that plug directly into your phone or laptop via USB-C), a tripod with optional lighting (the Rode Vlogger Kit), and your iPhone as a backup audio recorder via Apple Voice Memos.
This is great for recording on location, at events, or whenever you're not at your desk.
A solid setup for regular recording at your desk. We recommend an Elgato Facecam webcam, an Elgato Wave:3 or Rode NT-USB Mini microphone, and headphones, even AirPods in a pinch.
Make sure your lighting comes from in front of you (behind the camera), not behind you. Headphones are always recommended to prevent echo and improve audio quality. Test your setup with a short recording before your first session to make sure everything looks and sounds good.
